AMERICAN MINIATURE HORSES

July 2003

Winter has come with a vengeance, rain and mud being the order of the day and a touch of snow in the air just a week ago. The horses are all coping well, some even enjoying the chance to coat themselves in a thick layer of mud. It is hard to recognise these woolly dirty creatures as the beautiful show horses of the summer months. But as we find every year, a little bit of magic is worked in the spring and those same horses re-emerge looking like they have never been dirty in their lives.

We started the winter on a sad note, with the sudden loss of our darling Acacia Snifter. Our first ever mini, she will always hold a special place in our hearts. We have learnt firsthand how difficult it can be to succeed in beating colic. In spite of lots of care and attention, she was simply not strong enough to win this battle. Our two little Snifter descendants, Kit and Jackie are even more precious to us now and we like to look at them and remember all the things that made her a truly special horse.

Onto happier things – foals! We are on the countdown now with the first being due around August 25th, but we have learnt never to trust those dates entirely. The foaling alarm is out and the mares are all on full rations now. They love this feeding up in the final months.

It is so nice to hear news from the owners of horses bred by us. Arcadia Buck’s Nightshade is truly at home with Carolyn Sykes and family in Clevedon. He has decided that an open door is an invitation to be inside the house. The kids were delighted with his antics and Mum can’t have been too upset as she took time to take these pictures of his cheeky escapade. Arcadia Spirit’s Santana (Carlos) is the very much-loved horse of Selena Hawkins in Whangarei. Although he left us as a small foal, we could already see how much he enjoyed people and doing things with them. He is proving to be a great companion and his next goal is learning to jump. Selena sent us a lovely photo of him in show season and he looks so well and happy. We certainly sleep easy knowing that all our past babies are in good hands.

To finish with, we had excellent news from our local Mountain Minis Hi-Points with Holly of Kelcoron taking out the Broodmare of the Year title. Much of the credit for this must go to Cara Murtagh who expertly showed both her own horse, Arcadia Skywalker (Sky) and Arcadia First Lady (Jackie) over the season. Without her enduring patience and positive attitude we would not have this award. Kinetic Kissed By A Rose (who won last year) was placed 4th.
