February 2006

This season we ended up with two lovely colt foals as unfortunately Dee slipped her foal early and a couple of other mares decided to have a year off after testing positive for being in foal.

Cameo delivered us an exquisite buckskin pinto colt foal in mid October that we have called Arcadia Overtures Thunderchild.  Without a doubt Thunder is the friendliest foal we have every had and we have had some friendly foals.  He walked away from his mother immediately after being born to visit the strange "things" in his paddock with the lights.  Ever since he has been more than happy to reacquaint himself with us or to make new friends.  He is currently in training and we are eagerly anticipating him getting out to some shows late in the season.

Rosie continued her tradition of pinto foals and provided us with a beautifully marked bay and white pinto colt, Arcadia Dances with Wolves, in mid November.  Wolf is a real sweetie and while initially shy he has now developed the confidence to introduce himself to all including any visitors who will normally end up being groomed.

Another new addition to our family is Annie, an eighteen month old Samoyed.  We had to let our friend Ebony go back in September and we decided that we would like another Samoyed, Annie is the third to share our lives, so Carolyn started a search to see what would be available around Christmas.  One breeder she contacted had a young bitch that she needed to find a new home for so we had a Samoyed back in our home quicker than expected with Annie flying in from the deep south in October.  Annie has proven to live up to her registered name Kalnovitch Wicked Waggity Ann and is entertainingly wicked.  It has been a long time since we have had a young dog and we had forgotten the sly licks, the stolen (and often chewed) shoes and the boundless energy but we adore her and are glad to have her with us.

Another new arrival is our new stallion, Reflection, who arrived in New Zealand in mid-November.  A quick, and we will admit nervous, visit to the quarantine station confirmed that he was everything we had hoped for.  His type is stunning - compact body, long straight legs, awesome length of neck and a beautiful expressive head.  Everyone who has seen him agrees.  He made the trip to his new home in early December and has settled in extremely well.  While we may take him out later in the season we do not believe he has anything to prove in the show ring and our first priority is to allow him to recover from his journey which includes him putting a little condition back on.  We strongly believe he has bought positive attributes to our breeding program and look forward to seeing his progeny on the ground later in the year.  Reflection will be offered at stud by Private Treaty only.

Reflection's arrival coincided with the busy period on the stud with outside mares arriving to visit and our own mares finally starting to cycle so we have been busy serving mares, training foals, evaluating the show team and keeping them show trim along with multitude of other jobs that always need to be done around the stud.

We are entering the busy and business end of the show season and will be off to our first Regional of the season (Region 3) in the near future with two more to come (Regions 5 and 4) and then the big trek south to the National Show in Christchurch.
