August 2004

As we write, winter is still trying to keep its grip on Taranaki with cold days and even colder nights. We are always aware of that mountain looking down on us and are glad that this year we didn't breed any very early foals. Still the daffodils are out and hopefully in a month when our first baby arrives, spring will have finally appeared.

We look forward to three foals this season, all by Bluegables Monarch's Overture. First to foal is Jade in late September, followed by Cameo in early November and Rosie at the end of November. As always, we wait with great excitement. With Jade and Rosie, it is because we know what a great match Overture has been for them already. With Cameo we look forward to her first Overture baby.

Next year's breedings are already being planned. The addition of a wonderful new stallion has given us another excellent bloodline to put into our herd. Honeybourne Spirit's Iva Buck may be new to our place, but his breeding certainly isn't. We had two lovely foals by his sire a few years back and we know Iva is going to put that Buckeroo spirit into some of our next year's foals.

While we welcomed Iva, we also said goodbye to another horse. Darling wee Mia has gone to live in Wellington with Chanon Carroll and her family. All of Holly's foals are now bringing great pleasure to families with young children. Her own placid nature carries over into the foals, making them a pleasure to own and trustworthy around little ones. We couldn't have asked for a better home for Mia - we know already how much she is loved and cared for. We wish Chanon all the best when she takes Mia out in the show ring.

We were also pleased to hear (and see the photos as evidence) that Mia's sibling, Shade has now been broken into harness and is doing well with his little roadster cart. Well done Carolyn Sykes, for the work she has put into Shade. We know they are going to have a ball at the races this year.

Although shows are still two months away, one horse has been clipped already (don't worry, he is very snugly wrapped up). Rocky is off to Auckland with us to be our stud's ambassador at the Miniature Horse Expo. We are looking forward to meeting lots of mini owners and potential mini owners at this event. It's a long way to go but we were impressed at the initiative shown by Metropolitan Miniature Horse Club in organising the event. Anything that gets our minis publicity has to be great for all of us. Plus it's a nice chance for a pre-show season get together with all our mini friends.
